Several golf tourney winners have BCCC roots

Several winners in the BCCC Foundation's 18th annual Beaufort County Community College Foundation Golf Tournament have connections to Beaufort County Community College.

Among the winners were Ernie Glover, a winner in the Blue Flight and son of BCCC nursing instructor Sherry Glover; Red Flight winners Charlie Rasmussen, husband of BCCC Foundation Board member Radell Rasmussen, and Yeates Sprull, husband of Customized Training Coordinator Lauren Spruill; Purple Flight winner and BCCC President David McLawhorn and Gold Flight winner and BCCC Foundation Director Judy Jennette.

The tournament, held Friday, Oct. 21, at the Washington Yacht and Country Club, is the largest fundraising event held by the BCCC Foundation.

Potash Corp - Aurora, formerly PCS Phosphate, is the primary sponsor of the tournament. Other co-sponsors of the tournament include Lee Chevrolet-Buick, East Carolina Bank, First South Bank, CenturyLink, P & G Manufacturing Inc., Tideland EMC, Carver Machine Works, Flanders Filters, TriCounty Telephone, Wells Fargo Bank, JFK Architecture, and Park Boat Company.

BCCC announces spring registration schedule

Beaufort County Community College announces its registration schedule for Spring Semester which is scheduled to begin January 5, 2012.

Dates and deadlines for enrolling and registering are as follows:

October 31 – Registration begins for returning students who have applied for graduation, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
November 1 – Registration begins for all other returning students, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
November 2 – Registration for returning students and New Student Orientation followed by registration for students attending an orientation session, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
November 3 – Continued registration for new and returning students, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
November 4 — Continued registration for new and returning students, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
December 7 – Deadline to pay tuition for Spring 2012 semester.
January 4 – Late registration, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
January 5 – First day of classes.
January 5, 6, 9 and 10 ― Drop/add at Registrar’s Office.

New students may apply to enroll in BCCC at the Admissions Office in Building 9 on the BCCC campus or on the BCCC website at www.beaufortccc.edu.

Tuition and fees at Beaufort County Community College are established by the N.C. General Assembly and the N.C. Board of Community Colleges. In July 2011, tuition for in-state students was set at $66.50 per credit hour and student fees at $2 per credit hour for a total of $68.50 per credit hour. Tuition for out-of-state students was set at $258.50 per credit hour and student fees at $2 per credit hour for a total of $260.50.

Any student who has overdue library materials or who is delinquent in the payment of any fees, fines, or other obligations to the college will not be permitted to complete the registration process until the student has satisfactorily resolved the situation.

Art works sought for community college exhibit

The N.C. Community College System is seek- ing works of art created by current and former community college faculty and staff for the 2012 N.C. Community Colleges Art Exhibition.

All media suitable for use in a public office building are welcome, including, but not limited to paintings, drawings, graphic design, computer design and animation, photography, pottery, stained glass, weaving, woodcarving, metalwork and sculpture. The works of art will be displayed in public spaces on all six floors of the Caswell Building in Raleigh, home to the community college system office, and the spaces are well- suited to large-scale work.

Each college may select up to four piece of art for inclusion in the 2012 exhibit. To enter, artists must submit a signed exhibition art entry form

and up to two digital photographs of each work. The deadline for entry submissions to be in Raleigh is Dec. 2.

Still time to signup for Rembrandt & Rockettes trip!

There’s still time to register for the Nov. 12 and 13 trip offered by the Beaufort County Community College Foundation to the Triangle to see an exhibit of works by Rembrandt at the North Carolina Museum of Art and a performance by the famous Radio City Music Hall’s Rockettes at the Durham Performing Arts Center.

The trip will also include a four-hour shopping excursion to the Tanger Outlet Mall in Mebane as well as first class ac- commodations at the Washington Duke Inn in Durham.

The cost of the trip, open to all BCCC students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the college, is $361 per person, double oc- cupancy, and $435 per person, single occupancy. It is limited to 22 participants. The registration deadline is Friday, Oct. 28.

The price of the trip includes tours of two exhibits and lunch at the N.C. Museum of Art, a trip to Tanger Outlet Mall in Mebane, one night at the Washington Duke Inn in Durham, breakfast and dinner Sunday and tickets to the Christmas Spectacular at DPAC as well as transportation, tips and taxes.

The trip will leave the parking lot at BCCC by 7:30 a.m. Nov. 12 and arrive at the art museum about 10 a.m. Once there, the group will be met by a docent and tour the museum’s collection of 17th Century Dutch and Flemish paintings. Following the tour, the group will have lunch in the museum’s Iris Restaurant.

After lunch, the group will tour the museum’s “Rembrandt in America” exhibit, the largest collection of Rembrandt paint- ings ever presented in an American exhibition and the first major exhibition to explore in depth the history of collecting Rembrandt paintings in America. The NCMA is the only East Coast venue for this exceptional show that features works of art from across the United States.

After leaving the Museum of Art, participants will be driven to the Washington Duke Inn on the campus of Duke Uni- versity an AAA Four Diamond Award-winning luxury hotel. At this point, luggage will be unloaded and participants may choose from a number of different activities: shopping at the new Tanger Outlet Mall in Mebane, a visit to the Sarah P. Duke Gardens, a stroll around the Duke University campus, or just relaxing in the room.

For those remaining on the bus, the new Tanger Outlet Mall in Mebane will be the next stop. The mall also features a food court where tour participants may dine-on-their-own. The bus will return the shoppers to the hotel by 9 p.m.

On Sunday morning participants can enjoy break- fast buffet until 10 a.m. in the hotel’s Vista Restaurant. After breakfast, the bus will provide a ride to Duke Chapel at 10:30 a.m. for those wishing to attend the 11 a.m. church service.

Between noon and 12:30 p.m., the bus will gather up all participants at the hotel and the chapel, and go to DPAC for a 1 p.m. performance of the “Radio City Christmas Spectacular” featuring the world-famous Radio City Rockettes.

After the show, the bus will take participants for din- ner to Maggiano’s Little Italy Restaurant at Durham’s South Square Mall for a family style meal. Dinner at Maggiano’s, the winner of the 2011 Open Table – Din- ers’ Choice, will feature two appetizers, two salads, four main course dishes, and two desserts.

By 5 p.m. the bus will reload and return to Beaufort County around 7 p.m.

BCCC receives $2.2 million jobs grant

Students at Beaufort County Community College, including many who are dislocated workers, will benefit from a $2.2 million jobs grant that will pay for technology upgrades and new equipment for industry-related programs at the college, BCCC President David McLawhorn announced this week.

“BCCC is very excited about the chance to improve the campus learning environment, particularly for those students who are seeking new careers,” McLawhorn said. “There are job opportunities in eastern North Carolina for those with the appropriate skills and this grant will help our students learn the skills they need for those jobs.”

The funds will help BCCC build programs that meet the needs of local industries and improve Internet and technology-based learning, McLawhorn said.

The grant includes the following: $771,319 to improve technology at BCCC, including improvements in the campus wireless network; $564,192 to create “intelligent classrooms” linked to online teacher resources across the campus; $370,000 for a robotic welder and other equipment for the college’s welding programs; $76,000 in equipment for BCCC’s electrical and electronic engineering technology programs, and $65,708 for an emergent technology laboratory that will give students exposure to the latest in work-related technology as it is developed, McLawhorn said.

The goal of the technological improvements at BCCC is “to enable a student who is training for a new career - and not familiar with today’s technology - to graduate with the skills to work in a new economy in jobs that require a knowledge of that technology,” he said.

The BCCC grant is one of nearly $19 million in grants awarded to 10 community colleges across North Carolina for job training and workforce development announced earlier this month by U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis.

BCCC joined with community colleges in Buncombe, Craven, Cumberland, Davidson, Edgecombe, Haywood, Nash, Robeson and Surry to create the N.C. Advanced Manufacturing Alliance, which is responsible for implementing programs funded by the grant.

The alliance, headed by officials at Robeson Community College (RCC) in Lumberton, includes area industries, work force development boards and Apple Inc. The alliance has targeted for help those workers who have been affected by jobs lost in recent years as North Carolina-based industries have moved their operations to other countries.

The alliance estimates that some 5,730 workers in 17 counties served by the 10 community colleges have lost their jobs during a three-year period from 2007 to 2010 as industries have moved to China, Mexico, Canada, Honduras, Brazil and the United Arab Emirates.

Community colleges in the alliance plan to assess, train and certify the skills of some 2,300 students whose jobs have been lost.

Two Beaufort County industries - Carver Machine Works and PotashCorp-Aurora - have pledged to work with BCCC to provide resources, internships and jobs, as they become available, to students who complete job training through the program.

Steve Beckel, general manager of PotashCorp-Aurora, said, "At PotashCorp, if we're going to meet the challenge of feeding the world, we're going to need talented and skilled people to make it happen. We're pleased to partner with BCCC in this program and hope that students participating in it will emerge having a renewed sense of hope and direction, as well as the skills and self-confidence to step back into the work world."

Lindsey Crisp, the plant manager for Carver Machine Works stated, "We're delighted to hear that the North Carolina Advanced Manufacturing Alliance was successful in obtaining the TAACCCT grant. Technical training on cutting edge manufacturing processes is the key ingredient of a qualified workforce. These funds will help Beaufort Community College prepare the workforce for the future and allow companies in eastern North Carolina to remain competitive in a global economy. This grant award speaks volumes about the educators at the community college and the effectiveness of their leadership. "

PotashCorp-Aurora and Carver Machine Works are two of the 35 business and industries that have also agreed to participate in the training program.

Beginning conversational and workplace Spanish offered

Beaufort County Community College will offer a course in beginning conversational and workplace Spanish from 6 to 9 p.m., on Thursdays, beginning October 27 and ending December 15, at Mattamuskeet Elementary School. The instructor is Julio Morales. The registration fee is $65.

This class is designed to help the beginning student become comfortable with the Spanish language. Vocabulary, sentence structure, and verb conjugations will be taught. Students will also practice Spanish phrases and words that are important in their own places of work.

BCCC to offer morning class in Microsoft Excel

The Division of Continuing Education at Beaufort County Community College will offer a course in Microsoft Excel from 9 a.m. to noon, on Mondays and Wednesdays, beginning November 2 and ending November 28, in Room 822 of Building 8, on the BCCC campus.

Pre-registration is required. The registration fee is $65 and the technology fee is $5. The registration fee may be waived for one course per semester for individuals 65 years old or older. The technology fee applies to all students. Class size is limited to 15 students.

This 24-hour course will cover many topics associated with the Microsoft Excel program including formatting a workbook, working with formulas, functions, charts and graphics. Students will also learn to expand Microsoft Excel with Visual Basic for Applications. This course offers 2.4 continuing education units.

New introductory soccer course offered at BCCC this fall

BCCC will offer PED 147 – Soccer this fall on Friday mornings from 10:00-11:50 a.m. on the college campus. The course will introduce the basics of soccer with emphasis on rules, formations, strategies, and fundamental skills through a combination of classroom instruction and on-field participation. Prior soccer knowledge or experience is not needed. This course is appropriate for parents who want to learn more about the game their children are playing. The course will also include a component on coaching youth soccer for parent volunteers who are helping coach youth teams.

The instructor is Wesley Beddard. Beddard is the founder and president of Riptides Soccer and holds a youth soccer coaching license from the North Carolina Youth Soccer Association. He is a certified soccer referee for the United States Soccer Federation and the North Carolina High School Athletic Association.

Substitute teacher training offered

The Division of Continuing Education at Beaufort County Community College will offer a course in Effective Substitute Teacher Training on Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning August 23 and ending September 15.

The class will be conducted from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., in Room 826 of Building 8, on the BCCC campus. The 24-hour course will prepare participants to substitute teach in county school systems throughout the area. This course provides information on classroom management, teacher responsibilities, codes of conduct for school personnel, course instruction, and student management. Two BCCC students receive SECU scholarships

Two area students were recently chosen to receive the State Employees’ Credit Union Scholarship to attend Beaufort County Community College this year. Selected were two residents of Bath, Katrina Spencer and William Robert "Robbie" Edwards III.

Spencer was born and raised in Beaufort County and is the daughter of Linvert and Gloria Spencer of Bath. She has 2 sons ages 9 and 16. She is a graduate of Northside High School.

While in High School, Spencer began working as a cashier at Walmart. She moved on to become a teller at First South Bank and lastly a Customer Service Supervisor at ResCare, a mental health service provider for adults and children. When the ResCare office closed due to state budget cuts, Spencer saw it as the perfect opportunity to move her education off the back burner and go back to school.

When asked about her decision to return to school Spencer said, “I'm loving it! “

Edwards graduated with honors in 2011 from Northside High School. Upon graduating, he received the President's award for outstanding academic excellence. While at Northside, he participated in cross country running and was a member of the Beta Club and FFA. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America in 2009. Edwards is enrolled in the College Transfer program at BCCC. He is the son of Bill and Cindy Edwards.

The scholarships for the BCCC students are two of 116 two-year scholarships – two for each of the 58 community colleges statewide – given by the State Employees’ Credit Union Foundation each year.

The SECU Foundation is the charitable, non-profit arm of the State Employees’ Credit Union established to identify and address community issues that are beyond the normal scope of SECU itself. Its mission is to promote local community development primarily through projects in the areas of education, health and human services. The Foundation’s motto is “people helping people.”

Foundation projects are initiated through local SECU branch advisory boards and approved by the Foundation Board.

BCCC receives grant to address nursing shortage

Beaufort County Community College's nursing program has been chosen to participate in a program that strives to address a nationwide nursing shortage by increasing the number of nursing students who receive bachelor's degrees, college officials announced recently.

The project is funded through a $1,370,000 grant from the Duke Endowment to The Foundation for Nursing excellence to increase the number of Bachelor of Science in Nursing graduates in the state by expanding a regional project designed to increase the nurses who earn bachelors degrees. The project is known as Regionally Increasing Baccalaureate Nurses, or RIBN.

Laura Bliley, director of nursing at BCCC, and Mandy Jones, BCCC’s Allied Health admissions counselor, along with nursing educators in the region have been planning for this project for more than a year, with the goal of accepting applications this fall for entry into the Eastern North Carolina RIBN Curriculum in 2012.

The program is designed to allow students to take specific courses to earn both an Associate Degree Nursing from Beaufort County Community College and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from East Carolina University in ten semesters.

“We are pleased to continue our investment in The Foundation for Nursing Excellence and the RIBN program,” said Mary Piepenbring, vice president of The Duke Endowment. “This project works with innovative partnerships to implement an NC IOM priority recommendation and delivers the results we seek to strengthen the nursing workforce in our state and improve the delivery of care.”

Students accepted into this program will participate in a rigorous curriculum for four years, Bliley said.

During the first year of study through the program, students will complete many of the general education requirements for a nursing degree.

During their second and third years, students will complete their Associate Degree Nursing at BCCC while taking more general education courses. At the end of the third year, students will be eligible to take their licensure exam, and if successful, and work as registered nurses.

The fourth year of study is designed to enable students to complete their bachelor's degrees at ECU.

Throughout the four years the student will be enrolled in at least one on-line course as an ECU student.

The savings of both time and money for students in this program are significant, BCCC officials said in announcing the program.

Students who participate in the program will be required to apply for acceptance into a nursing program at BCCC or one of the other participating local community colleges and ECU.

Financial aid will be available to qualified students enrolled in the program. The first three years of aid should be requested through the participating community college and the fourth, through the university.

Entrance exam, classes set for Nurse Aide II course at BCCC

The Division of Continuing Education at Beaufort County Community College has announced that the entrance exam for its upcoming Nurse Aide II, or NA II, class will be given at 6 p.m., Tuesday, July 19, in the auditorium of Building 8 on the BCCC campus.

The entrance exam is offered free of charge. Test takers will need to currently be listed on the Nurse Aide I Registry and have a high school diploma or equivalent GED to enroll in the Nurse Aide II class. Test takers should also bring a photo identification to be admitted to the exam and a pencil.

Test scores will determine who is eligible for an NA II class, which will begin Saturday, Aug. 20 at 9 a.m. The class will meet Mondays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Pre-registration for the upcoming class begins after an applicant passes the entrance exam and has been accepted into the program.

Newest edition of Life on the Pamlico is now online

The 2011 edition of Life on the Pamlico, has been published on the Beaufort County Community College website.

Life on the Pamlico is a journal of oral histories from residents of coastal North Carolina. These volumes are a continuation of a tradition at Beaufort County Community College that dates back to 1981.

Spearheading the effort were BCCC English instructor Bryan Oesterreich and BCCC’s Academic Support Center Coordinator James Casey. Oesterreich was the editor and Casey designed the layout for Life on the Pamlico.“The format has changed from a question and answer style to biographical narratives,” Oesterreich said. “Students in my Cultural Studies college transfer class spent this fall semester interviewing residents of our area (most of whom are relatives) and wrote their stories to preserve the richness that was their way of life – for generations to come. Find a comfortable chair, pour a glass of sweet tea, and learn about how life used to be – Downeast Style.”
Said Casey, “When we first discussed a redesign of the LOTP publication, we had only begun to realize the possibilities that a purely digital format would afford. It is a paradox of sorts, in that technologies so thoroughly alien to many of the subjects in this publication, have become such an asset in preserving these glimpses of their past.”

BCCC Trustees to Meet on August 2

The Beaufort County Community College Board of Trustees will hold its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, August 2, 2011. The meeting will convene at 6:30 p.m., in the board meeting room of building 10. Reports from various committees, as well as the President’s report, will be presented at this meeting.

Commercial Truck Driver Training and CDL refresher course re-scheduled to begin July 26

It’s not too late to enroll in Beaufort County Community College’s commercial truck driver training program which has been rescheduled to begin on July 26, 2011. This 429 - hour course was developed to help fill the need for truck drivers in the area. The truck driver training program is operated by BCCC’s Division of Continuing Education and provides the training needed to obtain a Class - A Commercial Driver’s License. Portions of this course (120 hours) will also function as a CDL refresher course.

The commercial truck driving program will be held 6 to 9:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, and 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Driving hours will vary. Truck driving class work will be conducted on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Building 7 on the BCCC campus. CRC training will occur on Wednesdays, in room 823 of Building 8. The class is scheduled to run through August 28. The instructors are Haywood Broome and Tom Newman.

Those enrolled in the refresher course will join the class on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 9:30 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. for driving practice.

This course will take approximately 16 weeks to complete and will include classroom instruction, range work, and behind-the-wheel driving of a class - A vehicle (tractor-trailer). Range work will provide students with practice to develop off-road skills on which, CDL candidates will be tested. Over-the-road training will include intrastate driving experience as well as a variety of hours in both day and night driving. Students will be road tested by Beaufort County Community College’s third party examiner.

The registration fee for the course is $175. In addition there will be a $40 random drug test fee and a career readiness testing fee of $30. The total due at registration is $245. The fee for the refresher course is also $245.

The required textbooks and materials for both the class and the refresher course include: $51.75 for the main textbook, the road atlas is $26.25, the logbook is $6.00, the logbook trainer is $5.00, and the FMCSR Pocket Book is $5.25. The total for all of the books is $94.25. These books are available in the BCCC bookstore (book prices subject to change).

All students are required to have their NC Department of Transportation Health Card and DOT drug test, along with all fees, at the time of registration. Students are also required to have their CDL Class-A Permit on the first day of class. Obtaining this permit is done through the NC Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV). Students who already have a CDL Class-A Permit should check to make sure they will have a valid permit for the duration of the course. Please note that students will be subject to random drug screening throughout the duration of the course as required by NCDMV.

Students should register for the truck driving program or the refresher course in person in room 802 of Building 8 on the BCCC campus. Class size is limited to 24 students. Orientation set for fourth Early College High School class

Orientation for students who will enter the Beaufort County Early College High School (ECHS) this fall and their parents has been set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 26, at the high school on the campus of Beaufort County Community College.

Sixty students have been chosen for the high school’s freshman class out of 135 applicants whom represented about 25 percent of the eighth grade population of Beaufort County’s schools, according to Principal Todd Blumenreich.

The addition of the school’s fourth class of ninth grade students brings the student body to about 190, he said.

The offices and half of the classrooms for the school are located in Building 10 on the community college campus. The ECHS will have a total enrollment of 220 students at the end of five years.

While the majority of the school’s applicants initially came from the Washington attendance area, the school has seen an increase in applicants in recent years from the eastern and southern areas of the county, Blumenreich said.

Early College High School students take high school and tuition-free community college courses and graduate in five years with a high school diploma and an associate’s degree in the field of their choice. They can then either head into the work force with job-related skills or transfer to a four-year college.

The students at the high school face a rigorous schedule of classes in the ninth grade – equivalent to honors courses in a traditional high school – that prepare them to begin taking community college courses as early as the 10^th grade.

Late Registration for Fall Semester at Beaufort County Community College will be 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. August 15. Fall Semester classes begin August 16.

New students may apply to enroll at BCCC in the Admissions Office in Building 9 on the BCCC campus or on the BCCC website at www.beaufortccc.edu. It is recommended that new students apply start the application process now to ensure students will be eligible to register during late registration.

Tuition and fees at Beaufort County Community College are established by the N.C. General Assembly and the N.C. Board of Community Colleges. Tuition for in-state students was recently set at $66.50 per credit hour and student fees at $2 per credit hour for a total of $68.50 per credit hour. Tuition for out-of-state students was set at $258.50 per credit hour and student fees at $2 per credit hour for a total of $260.50.

Registration is now under way for the 18th annual Beaufort County Community College Foundation Golf Tournament to be held Friday, Oct. 21, at the Washington Yacht and Country Club.

Potash Corp – Aurora is the primary sponsor of the tournament, held each year to raise money for scholarships to BCCC.

Other co-sponsors of the tournament include Lee Chevrolet-Buick, East Carolina Bank, First South Bank, CenturyLink, P & G Manufacturing Inc., Stanadyne, Tideland EMC, Carver Machine Works, Wells Fargo Bank, JKF Architecture, and Park Boat Company.

The tournament format will be a four-person super ball with teams pre-flighted based on each golfer’s handicap. There will be two tee times offered ― 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. with a limit of 20 teams per session.

This is the third year that the tournament will offer two tee times to accommodate the growing number of golfers who want to participate, according to Judy Meier Jennette, director of the BCCC Foundation.

The entry fee ― $70 per player ― includes lunch, cart rental, and greens fees. Mulligans will be sold this year.

The largest single annual fundraising event for the college, the tournament typically raises more than $10,000 for scholarships and programs supported by the BCCC Foundation.

Team prizes will be awarded by 18-hole score in each of three flights in both the morning and afternoon session. Four prize packages for “closest to the pin” shots will also be awarded. Hole-in-one prizes sponsored by Lee Chevrolet-Buick and Park Boat Company will also be available.

BCCC holds graduation exercises

For Beaufort County Community College student Lauren Davis, Friday’s gradua- tion exercises represented the end of a 110-mile round-trip drive from her home in Tyrrell County to the class room in Washington and the beginning of her career as a nurse.

“It’s a relief,” she said as she posed for photographs with her parents, Todd and Paula Oliver. “It’s been a long time.”

Davis, 22, earned an as- sociate’s degree nursing from BCCC Friday and is scheduled to begin working as a nurse at Beaufort County Medical Center where she has worked as an aide for the past few years.

For Paula Oliver, the moment was an emotional one that she shared with her daughter.

“It’s a milestone,” she said as she wiped tears from her eyes. “I am thankful and I am proud of her.”

With an improving economic outlook across the state, Oliver is just one of the BCCC grads who received their diplomas Friday and walked off the stage and into a job.

For Andy Hill of Washington, Friday’s graduation ceremony represented the end of a quest for a career that will keep him closer to home with his three children.

As an archeologist, Hill, 34, was out of town for months at a time. He decided to return to school and pursue an associate’s degree nursing from BCCC and soon begins work as a nurse in the cardiovascular intermediate unie at Pitt County Me- morial Hospital.

“It was something I was drawn to,” he said. “It makes a difference in people’s lives.”

Another graduate who joins Davis and Hill in the work force is Josh Clayton of Falkland. Clayton received an associate’s degree in automotive system’s technology from BCCC on Friday.

“It’s a long road getting here,” Clayton said. “I finally made it.”

Friday night, some 216 BCCC students received 197 degrees, diplomas and certificates and 19 high school equivalency degrees from Mitchell St. Clair, chairman of the BCCC Board of Trustees at the college’s 44th annual commence- ment exercises held at Washington High School.

They received advice from a local doctor with strong ties to the college who has practiced medi- cine for over 20 years.

Dr. Karen A. Thomas began her studies at BCCC and is a cum laude graduate of East Caro- lina University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in biology in 1983. After completing her studies at ECU, Thomas earned a medical degree from the ECU School of Medicine in 1987 and completed a family practice residency at Ander- son Memorial Hospital in Anderson, S.C. in 1990.

Dr. Thomas returned to BCCC in 2003 where she studied writing under Instructor Brian Oesterreich. She is the author of several articles for

medical and general circulation periodicals including “Straight from the Heart: Dr. Randolph Chit- wood, cardiac surgery,” published in Our State in 2005 and “A lighthearted way to attract new patients,” published in Medical Economics in 2008.

Referring to a recent movie, she said, “Forrest Gump was wrong. Life is not like a box of chocolates. Life is like an IPod. It sounds an awful lot like what you put in it.”

“Keep adding to your playlist,” she said. “As you add to the soundtrack of your life, I encourage you to learn, to play, to share. . .Not only will you enrich your lives, you’ll enrich our lives as well.”

Milton Cobb, president of the BCCC Student Government Association, presided over the ceremony attended by about 1,000 family members and guests of the gradu- ates. Dr. David McLawhorn, BCCC presi- dent, welcomed those attending the gradu- ation exercises.

Awards went to James Terry Draper, Jus- tin Trent Hill and Amanda Grace Rose who were recognized with the highest academic average in the college transfer programs

and Christopher L. Garrison who was recognized with the highest academic average in associate in applied science degree programs. Draper earned an associate’s degree in general education, Garrison an associate’s degree in business administration and Hill and Rose, associate in arts degrees.

While some of Friday’s graduates were going directly into the work force, some were continuing their studies. After receiving his high school equivalency degree Friday, Victor Wilcox of Vanceboro plans to pursue criminal justicestudies at BCCC with the goal of becoming a

law enforcement officer. “It feels really nice that he finally finished up,”

said Wilcox’s older brother, Kelly, who traveled from Suffolk, Va., to witness the ceremony.

For Latisha Mills of Engelhard, Friday’s gradu- ation represented only a pause in her studies. Mills, 30, earned an associate’s degree in ac- counting and will begin pursuing a bachelor’s degree in accounting this fall from East Carolina University.

“I am excited,” she said. “It’s an accomplish- ment.”

For her husband, Fred Mills Jr., the gradua- tion ceremonies meant a temporary end to eat- ing cold sandwiches for dinner to give his wife more time to concentrate on her studies.

“I’ll be eating a whole lot better now that she can cook again for at least two months,” he said. “Then it’s back to sandwiches.”

Entrance exam and classes set for Nurse Aide I course at BCCC

The Division of Continuing Education at Beaufort County Community College has announced that the entrance exam date for its upcoming Nurse Aide I, or NA I, class will be given at 6 p.m., Thursday, June 9, in the auditorium of Building 8, on the BCCC campus.

The entrance exam is offered free of charge. Test takers will need to bring a photo identification to be admitted to the exam and a pencil.

Test scores will determine who is eligible for an NA I class, which will begin Monday, July 18, at 6 p.m. The class will meet 6 to 9:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and every other Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Pre-registration for the upcoming class begins after an applicant passes the entrance exam and has been accepted into the program.

Foundation croquet tourney set for May 14
Registration is now under way for the Eighth Annual Cutthroat Croquet Tournament to be held Saturday, May 14 along the waterfront in Bath.
The tournament is an annual fundraiser to continue the Dorothy and John Tankard Memorial Scholarship for a Bath or Belhaven student at Beaufort County Community College and for enhancing Historic Bath, to which the Tankards were dedicated.
This year, the tournament will have a new look intended to provide more playing time for those interested in less aggressive play. The first round of the tournament will be used to flight players into one of two flights - the Cutthroat Flight for more aggressive players or the Rapscallion Flight for those who enjoy more leisurely play. Each flight will offer booty for the top four finalists.
The tournament will be held in conjunction with Bath Fest, a day-long series of activities that will also include historic demonstrations, homes tours and a crafts show all within walking distance in Bath. As players complete their play, they may tour the entire area at no charge.
Southern Bank and Trust Co. of Belhaven, Rod Cantrell, CFP, Edward Jones Investments of Washington and Tankard Farms are the corporate sponsors of the tournament.
The registration fee for the tournament is $35 for each player. The fee includes at least two rounds of croquet and a picnic lunch. Spectators may join participants for lunch for a fee of $15.

The Division of Continuing Education at Beaufort County Community College will offer two classes in the basics of Microsoft Excel 2010 this spring.
A day class will be 1 to 4 p.m. on Thursdays, beginning May 26 and ending July 14, in Room 822 of Building 8, on the BCCC campus. An evening class will be conducted from 6 to 9 p.m., on Tuesdays, beginning May 24 and ending July 12, also in room 822 of Building 8 on the BCCC campus.

The workshop will help participants identify problems within their businesses, recognize changes that affect them, formulate a plan to react to these changes and learn a process for continuous improvement.
The workshop will be presented by SCORE counselors. The SCORE Association is a national, nonprofit organization with a public service mission to provide professional guidance and information to business men and women.

BCCC announces summer hours

Beaufort County Community College has announced its operating hours for the summer. The official daytime operating hours for the college will be 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday beginning Monday, May 16, and ending Thursday, August 4. Evening classes will operate Monday through Thursday nights. Two holidays will be observed during the summer schedule – Memorial Day, Monday, May 30, and Independence Day, Monday, July 4. The college will be closed on Fridays. BCCC President David McLawhorn said the scheduled will allow the college to “maximize the financial and human resources available to conduct the college’s essential work during the summer term.”

BCCC to offer course in Quick Books

The Division of Continuing Education at Beaufort County Community College will offer a course in Quick Books by Quicken from 1 to 5 p.m., on Wednesdays, beginning May 4 and ending May 18, in Room 822 of Building 8, on the BCCC campus.

In this 12-hour course, students will learn the Premier Accountant 2010 edition of Quick Books including topics such as working with bank accounts, entering sales and billing information, tracking and paying sales tax and bills and analyzing financial data. The course offers 1.2 Continuing Education Units.

Four chosen as BCCC Ambassadors

Four students have been selected by a subcommittee of the Beaufort County Community College Foundation Board of Directors to represent BCCC as Ambassadors for 2011-2012. Those selected are Michelle Leggett, Blake Perry, Catrena Ross, and Vickie Wilkinson.
They join five others – Kendall Hayden of Washington, Candace Smith Howell of Plymouth, and Kelli Lozano, Katherine Thomas, and Kenneth J. Worsley, all of Washington – who will continue to represent the college as Ambassadors in the coming year.
“This is an excellent team of Ambassadors. They come from all walks of life and experiences and they represent a variety of programs at BCCC,” said BCCC Foundation Director Judy Jennette. “We hope that BCCC Ambassadors will become increasingly visible on the campus and the community in the coming year.”
Leggett, of Jamesville, is a student in BCCC’s Associate Degree Nursing Program. She holds a bachelor’s degree in computer information systems from Devry Institute of Technology. At BCCC, Leggett is a member of the Beaufort County Association of Nursing Students and Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society. She is an assistant instructor for first aid and CPR classes with the American Red Cross and is a member of the Washington Montessori Public Charter School’s Grounds Maintenance and Hospitality Committees, among other activities. Before coming to BCCC, she was employed with Triangle Planning Services, Inc.
Perry, also of Jamesville, is also a student in BCCC’s Associate Degree Nursing Program. He holds dual bachelor’s degrees in biblical studies and the history of ideas from The College at Southeastern in Wake Forest. Before coming to BCCC, he was employed with Avoca Inc. in Merry Hill.
Ross, of Chocowinity, is pursuing an Associate in Criminal Justice degree from BCCC. A graduate of Chocowinity High School, Keys is employed by the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office as a captain in the county detention center. She is the daughter of Virgel Ross of Chocowinity and Floyd and Evelyn Ross of Washington and has four children. In 2009, Ross was named supervisor of the year for the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office and the N.C. Jail Administration Association Detention Officer of the Year for the state and eastern region of North Carolina. She plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice after completing her studies at BCCC.
Wilkinson, also of Chocowinity, is pursuing an Associate in Arts degree from BCCC and hopes to become a third grade teacher after graduating from BCCC. Before coming to BCCC, she worked as an administrative assistant for The Wesley Foundation of Greenville and as a manager for Health Information Services and Transcription of Rocky Mount.
Those selected as Ambassadors receive a one-year tuition scholarship and help the college market its programs and services. To be considered for the Ambassador’s program, students must be nominated by a faculty member and meet the following minimum qualifications: A high level of commitment to BCCC; outgoing personality; good verbal communication and presentation skills; poise and ability to make a positive first impression; scheduling flexibility, and have their own transportation. Ambassadors are expected to maintain a grade point average of 2.5 or higher throughout their tenure.
As part of the selection process, applicants were asked to submit a resume and to participate in a videotaped interview. A panel comprised of members of the BCCC Foundation Board of Directors and local business and civic leaders conducted interviews in an informal setting with candidates for the position.

Thomas is graduation speaker

Karen A. Thomas, a doctor who studied writing at Beaufort County Community College and writes a column for the local newspaper, will deliver the commencement address at the 2011 graduation exercises for Beaufort County Community College to be held Friday, May 13.
BCCC graduation ceremonies will be held at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of Washington High School. Admission is by ticket, available from members of the 2011 graduating class.
Although Thomas grew up in northern Virginia - graduating from high school in Manassas, Va., in 1974 - where she particularly enjoyed horseback riding and other outdoor pursuits, her roots are in eastern North Carolina.
Thomas’ parents, Robert and Naomi Gurganus Alligood, grew up in Bath. They moved to the Washington, D.C., area after they graduated from high school - her mother to work for the FBI, her father to serve as a comptroller for a lumber company in Georgetown. The family moved back to Beaufort County after Thomas graduated from high school.
Dr. Thomas has been a leader in the Beaufort County and state medical community for many years.
Dr. Thomas began her studies at BCCC and is a cum laude graduate of East Carolina University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in biology in 1983. After completing her baccalaureate studies at ECU, Thomas earned a medical degree from the ECU School of Medicine in 1987 and completed a family practice residency at Anderson Memorial Hospital in Anderson, S.C. in 1990.
She began her Washington based medical practice in 1990 when she served as an associate physician at Washington Family Medicine Center. She has also served with the ECU Student Health Services in Greenville, Dominion Health Medical Associates in Chase City, Va., Agape Community Health Clinic and Washington Women’s Care in Washington, and Pungo Family Medicine in Belhaven.
With the support of several local churches, Thomas operated a clinic in Bland, Va., in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. Using donated equipment and supplies, she provided primary care for people living in the region who had no other access to medical treatment.
Thomas is the 1983 recipient of the Helms Award presented by the Biology Department at ECU, the 1988 alternate recipient of the Meade Johnson Award, and the 1990 recipient of the Outstanding Resident Award at Anderson, S.C.
Dr. Thomas returned to BCCC in 2003 where she studied writing under Instructor Brian Oesterreich. She is the author of several articles for medical and general circulation periodicals including “Straight from the Heart: Dr. Randolph Chitwood, cardiac surgery,” published in Our State in 2005 and “A lighthearted way to attract new patients,” published in Medical Economics in 2008.
Dr. Thomas’ family also has strong ties to North Carolina community colleges. Her husband, Bill Thomas, earned a degree in electronics from then Pitt Technical Institute. Her daughter, Katherine is a student at BCCC and currently serves as one of the college’s Ambassadors.

Beaufort County Community College seeks community opinions

Every three years a Community Satisfaction Survey is mailed out to the Beaufort County Community College four-county service area (Beaufort, Hyde, Tyrrell, and Washington counties) asking how well Beaufort County Community College is doing in meeting the community’s needs. This information is very important in assisting BCCC with its long range planning.
This year, in an effort to save money, BCCC is posting the community survey on the Internet. The link to the Internet online survey can be found on the College website which is www.beaufortccc.edu. The survey is accessed via a very large blue button about midway on the BCCC home page. The button is labeled “BCCC Community Survey” at the top, and there is a brief set of instructions under the heading. The survey is very short and takes only a few minutes to complete. The survey will be accessible online throughout the months of April and May.

Register now for the 8th Annual Cutthroat Croquet Tournament on May 14

Registration is now underway for the Eighth Annual Cutthroat Croquet Tournament - a fundraiser for the Beaufort County Community College Foundation and Historic Bath State Historic Site. For the first time this year, the tournament will be flighted. This will allow the more aggressive players to compete in the “Cutthroat” flight and the more gentle players to compete in the “Rapscallion” flight. Prizes will be awarded to the top four finishers in both flights. The tournament, held in conjunction with BathFest, will be 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 14, at Bonner Point in Bath. Most players will be finished by 2 p.m. The registration fee for the tournament is $35 for each player and includes at least three rounds of croquet, a delicious picnic lunch, and beverages throughout the day. Spectators can enjoy lunch and watch the tournament for $15. BCCC offers class in intermediate computer skills

The Division of Continuing Education will offer an Intermediate Computer Skills class that is designed to help computer users become more efficient and comfortable with computer applications. In this class, students with basic computer skills will advance to greater proficiency in Microsoft Office and the use of e-mail, the Internet and various social media. This 24-hour class includes specific activities and students may ask for individual needs to be addressed.

The class will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays, beginning April 12 and ending June 14, at the Washington County Center for Human Services in Plymouth. Entrance exam, class set for Nurse Aide I course at BCCC

The Division of Continuing Education at Beaufort County Community College has announced that the entrance exam for its upcoming Nurse Aide I, or NA I, class will be given at 6 p.m., Thursday, April 14, in the auditorium of Building 8 on the BCCC campus.

The entrance exam is offered free of charge. Test takers will need to bring a photo identification to be admitted to the exam and a pencil.

Test scores will determine who is eligible for the NA I class, which will begin Tuesday, May 31, at 8:30 a.m. The class will meet 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Pre-registration for the upcoming class begins after an applicant passes the entrance exam and has been accepted into the program.

BCCC increases summer class offerings,  sets Summer Term registration dates

Beaufort County Community College has increased the number of course offerings available for the 2011 Summer Term – including online courses - and has announced the registration schedule for this term.

BCCC will offer some 82 seated classes (in a classroom on the BCCC campus or at a clinical site), in topics ranging from Art Appreciation to Spanish, and will offer 46 online and or hybrid classes, in topics ranging from Business Communication to Security Concepts during the 2011 Summer Term. Hybrid classes are conducted both in the classroom and online.

“Due to the economy, many students want to accelerate their education by taking classes year-round so they can enter the work force sooner, said BCCC Dean of Instruction Wesley Beddard. “To respond to this need, BCCC has increased the number of courses it will offer during the 2011 Summer Term.”

All of the college transfer classes offered during the Summer Term classes are what BCCC refers to as “self-supporting classes.” This means that there is no state funding attached to them. Hence, these courses will have a higher tuition rate of $113 per credit hour. However, these classes carry the same credits as the Fall and Spring Semesters and may be applied toward graduation and or transferred to other institutions.

All of the technical courses have the same tuition rate in the summer as in the fall and spring. The tuition for in-state students in these classes is $56.50 per credit hour.

“Because the college is not reimbursed for college transfer classes taught during the summer, we have traditionally offered only a few summer term classes,” he said. “By offering these classes on a self-supporting basis we are able to provide more course options for BCCC students, those students who attend other colleges or universities and are home for the summer and high school students who want to get a head start on their college education.”

The Summer Term 2011 registration schedule is as follows:

Registration is 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. beginning Monday, April 11 for returning students. Registration for returning and new students is 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. beginning Tuesday, April 12.
Late registration is 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 16.
The first day of class is Wednesday, May 17. Summer term ends Thursday, July 14.

Registration allows the students and the advisors to evaluate progress and plan courses to be taken during the following semester.

New students must apply for admission before registering for classes. Those with questions about the admissions process should contact the Admissions Office in Building 9 on the BCCC campus, visit the BCCC website at www.beaufortccc.edu or call 252-940-6237. It is also recommended that new students bring copies of placement test scores and/or college transcripts to registration.

Returning students are asked to advise the Registrar’s Office in Building 9 of any changes – such as name, address, or program of study – since completing their initial admissions application.

Tuition will be billed and mailed to students Friday, April 15. Tuition must be paid by 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 4. Students who do not pay by this date will automatically have their classes canceled. The Cashier’s Office accepts cash, check, Visa, and Master Card.

Minority Male Mentoring Program re-energized

Brookshire is the staff advisor and Milton Cobb is the group leader as well as a mentor. Kenneth Worsley and Michael Cobb are also mentors for the program.

Mentoring for minority male students at Beaufort County Community College is being re-energized this semester thanks to a Student Development Services grant from the North Carolina Community College System.
Under the leadership of Student Government Association President Milton Cobb, the program, Men Mentoring Men, has been re-established and members of the group are seeking volunteers to help mentor minority male students at BCCC.
"I wanted to change attitudes and encourage my peers to stay in school," said Cobb, now in his second year as a business student at BCCC.
"I have seen many students get frustrated and quit college because they don’t have the resources or contacts to help them navigate the system when things get difficult," he said. "I want to help them build networks and solve problems before they become insurmountable."
The group meets once a month.
Planned activities for the group include: mentoring, counseling, seminars, workshops, educational tours, cultural events, and service projects. Additionally, M3 participants will become involved in academic planning and career mapping to facilitate their transferring to four-year institutions.
To date there are three trained mentors at BCCC: Cobb, Kenneth Worsley, and Michael Cobb, who is a former SGA president and Milton Cobb’s nephew. Each of the mentors was required to undergo eight hours of face-to-face leadership training as well as view a number of instructional videos.
After finishing their training, each mentor was assigned two men to mentor. They meet once a week.
Now two months underway, the new mission of the M3 program on the BCCC campus is to enhance the life experiences of minority male students at BCCC.
The program serves as a support system and a resource for students with the end goal of maximizing their achievement at BCCC and beyond.
The goals for the group in the 2010 – 2011 academic year include identifying and achieving personal goals, negotiating the academic world, improving self-confidence, developing skills to handle and overcome obstacles, and developing character and leadership.
M3 members have agreed to volunteer as a group for the Beaufort County Special Olympics on April 20 and have met with Bishop Samuel Jones to learn about his Purpose of God program. Several more programs are being planned for the current spring semester at BCCC.
The M3 coordinator and advisor is Sue Brookshire. Brookshire is the Director of Retention Services at BCCC and is hopeful that this program will become a mainstay at BCCC. Currently, students come to the program via their own desire to join or by being referred by a BCCC faculty member.
"I am working with these young men to build a program that will encourage the mentee to become the mentor. These mentoring skills will go with our students and serve their respective communities long after they graduate. This program will also serve as a valuable retention tool once it takes root."

Club Waves plans hair, fashion show

The skills of Beaufort County Community College cosmetology students will be on display this month when BCCC’s cosmetology club, Club Waves, holds its first hair and fashion show.
The event is scheduled for 6 p.m., Saturday, April 16, at the Turnage Theater in downtown Washington.
A portion of the proceeds from the show will be donated to a local charity that benefits women and children.
Tickets for the event are $5 in advance and $7 at the door. Children under age 5 may attend at no charge.
Tickets are available at the BCCC Cosmetology Department in Building 11 on the BCCC campus.
Tickets may also be purchased at La Chic Boutique in Bethel, Just My Cut Salon in Washington, and Capelli Salon in Washington.

The event is being used to showcase the talent of BCCC cosmetology students and as a fund raiser for Club Waves. Local store owners will also be invited to highlight their spring fashions during the show.
"We are trying create a win-win event," Williams said. "The cosmetology students get a chance to show off their skill and talent, and our local merchants get an opportunity to show off their merchandise on live models."

thrilled that it was available on April 16," she said. "We are lucky to have a facility like this in our community."
The show will feature six distinct segments of hair styles and fashions – professional, casual, children, prom and bridal, nightlife, and avant garde.
Williams said at least 60 hair styles will be featured throughout the show.
Local hair salons and barber shops will have booths set up in the front lobby area of the Turnage an hour prior to the show. To date, Just My Cut Salon, Capelli Salon, Ruff Kutz Barber Shop, and La Chic Boutique will be participating. Pamlico Music and Sound has also registered as a vendor. Attendees will have an opportunity to learn about the products and services offered by the vendors.

Learn to make your own hand-made jewelry in this Jewelry-Making 101 class offered by the Division of Continuing Education at Beaufort County Community College!

Ever wondered what to do with old class rings, out-of-style belts, unmatched earrings or those gold chains from the 1980s?
The Division of Continuing Education at Beaufort County Community College will offer a class in recycling old jewelry into fun, new contemporary pieces. Stowe joins BCCC nursing faculty

Chrystie Stowe, a Washington County native and new nursing instructor at Beaufort County Community College, says she “really didn’t ever seriously consider anything else” other than a career in nursing.

Inspired by an aunt, a high school teacher, and the desire to help people, Stowe, a native of Roper, chose her career path early. Now she looks forward to teaching a new generation of nurses.

“A large majority of your job as a nurse is educating patients about their care,” she said. “All I’m doing is changing who I’m teaching. Now, I’m teaching the teachers.”

In September, she joined the BCCC faculty as an instructor in the college’s Associate Degree Nursing Program. She replaces Cindy Winstead who resigned earlier this year to accept a position at East Carolina University. This fall, Stowe is teaching women’s health and is also helping to rewrite the content of that course based on new curriculum standards.

"We are delighted to have Chrystie join our team,” said Laura Bliley, director of BCCC’s nursing programs. “She is already showing a great deal of energy and skill as she prepares for the classes that she will be teaching."

A 2000 graduate of Plymouth High School, Stowe earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from East Carolina University in 2003 and a master’s degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner from ECU in 2010. She also holds an Emergency Medical Technician basic certification.

Stowe has a variety of nursing experience. From 2001 to 2003, she served as a nursing assistant I on the medical/surgical unit at Chowan Hospital in Edenton and from 2003-2004, as a nursing assistant II in the Cardiac Surgery Intermediate unit at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. After earning her nursing degree, Stowe remained at Pitt County Memorial Hospital as a staff nurse in the Cardiac Intermediate unit. She held that position until 2005 when she joined the staff in radiology nursing at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, a position she held until 2008. In 2006, Stowe also joined the Emergency Department nursing staff at Bertie Memorial Hospital.

It’s this variety of nursing opportunities that appealed to Stowe about the profession. She felt she didn’t want to be limited to just one type of work.

“With one degree, you can work in anything in Nursing,” she said. “All you need is one degree.”

Stowe is a member of the North Carolina Nurses Association and the American Nurses Association. She is a past member of the Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society.

She was the 2000 recipient of the North Carolina Nurse Scholars Scholarship and the 2008 recipient of the Nurse Educators of Tomorrow Scholarship.

Stowe is a member of the Roper Pentecostal Holiness Church, where she sings in the choir, and serves as a volunteer with the Jamesville Community Fire, EMS, and Rescue Squad. She also assists with fundraising for the Jamesville Fire Department where her husband serves as a volunteer firefighter.

She and her husband, Brian, an Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate, live in Jamesville. Stowe enjoys reading and spending time with family. Her parents are Thomas and Rita Tarkenton of Roper.

Holloman joins BCCC faculty

Thomyka Holloman always enjoyed computers but never considered pursuing a career in their use until her father suggested it.

“I enjoyed computers but I never thought about going into the field,” she said. “My father thought I’d have a better chance of having a good career with computers.

“And when I got into it, I loved it,” she said.

This fall Holloman joined the faculty at Beaufort County Community College teaching Introduction to Computers, CIS 110 and Computer Basics, CIS 113, in the college’s Business Division.

The Ahoskie native said she was initially drawn to computers because she enjoyed learning about new software applications and video games.

And as a teacher, she is following in the footsteps of several family members including her mother who has spent 21 years teaching in public schools.

She didn’t originally think about applying her knowledge of computers to a career in teaching.

But she discovered that she particularly enjoys “introducing students to new things.”

"Thomyka has joined the Business Division team at one of our busiest times. She has proven herself to be a wonderful team member, student oriented, and very capable,” said Donna Dunn, chairman of BCCC’s Business Division. “BCCC students will benefit from her knowledge of technology and her dedication to education. We are very proud and lucky to have her join the college faculty."

Holloman is a graduate of Hertford County High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial technology from Elizabeth City State University in 2006, a master’s degree in information systems from the University of Phoenix in 2008, and a master’s of business administration from the University of Phoenix in 2010.

Holloman began her teaching career at Hertford County High School, serving as a computer technology, engineering/drafting, and career management teacher at the high school from 2007 to 2008. Before joining the faculty at BCCC, she served as a computer instructor at Wilson and Edgecombe Community colleges.

Holloman and her family live in Winterville. Her husband, Trevor Watlington, owns a barbershop in Greenville. They have three children, Trevon, one, Kendal, four, and five-year old Trevor Jr., a kindergarten student at Wintergreen School.

Holloman is a member of Koinonia Christian Center in Greenville and is an active volunteer and mentor for recent Ivory Coast immigrants. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with family and friends.

ECHS student wins Science Festival prize

Bethany Price, a student in the Beaufort County Early College High School, was a prize winner in a contest held at Beaufort County Community College in conjunction with the N.C. Science Festival. Price was one of about 50 students, faculty, and staff who participated in the BCCC event, dubbed “Who’s the baby’s Daddy.” The contest asked participants to compare genetic band patterns from two possible imaginary fathers with genetic band patterns of an imaginary child and its imaginary mother. The experiment was designed to be conducted in about a minute by BCCC student Christie Cotter. The BCCC event was coordinated by Ana McClanahan, BCCC agricultural biotechnology instructor. The festival, held Sept. 11-26, featured more than 350 events across the state. It was created by the Morehead Planetarium at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to provide more opportunities for North Carolinians to explore science and to highlight the educational, cultural, and economic impact of science in the state. BCCC Alumni Association is "taking flight!"

The BCCC Foundation is working with a several BCCC graduates to form an Alumni Association.

The first event planned by this group will be a “Join the Flock” reception at the NC Estuarium on Friday, October 22, 2010 from 7:30-9:00 p.m.

This event is scheduled to coincide with the Pig Parade and Music in the Streets on Friday evening and Smoke on the Water on Saturday.

The “Join the Flock” event is free and open to all BCCC alumni. Light refreshments, catered by Ann Martin of the Meeting Place will be served and the NC Estuarium will be open for touring. A brief presentation featuring BCCC alumni will be conducted in the auditorium of the Estuarium.

Two holes-in-one cap BCCC Foundation Golf Tournament

It was an unusual day on the golf links when two players scored holes-in-one at the Beaufort County Community College Foundation’s 17^th annual Golf Tournament held Friday, Sept. 10, at the Washington Yacht and Country Club.

The tee shots for golfers Paul Manning, of Washington, and Will Franklin, of Greenville, went in on hole number 15 at the golf course, earning each a set of Callaway fairway woods and a $500 Visa Card provided by Lee Chevrolet-Buick and Park Boat Company.

The tournament, of which PCS Phosphate in Aurora is a major sponsor, is held each year to raise money for BCCC scholarships.

This year’s tournament raised more than $10,000 for the Foundation, according to Foundation Director Judy Meier Jennette

“The BCCC Foundation is very pleased with the continuing support the community has shown for this golf tournament,” she said. “It is a very popular tournament among players who are dedicated to the support of higher education in Beaufort County and the surrounding region.”

“Thanks to the support of these golfers and other generous members of the community, the BCCC Foundation awarded more than $28,000 to some 50 deserving students who are attending BCCC this fall,” she said.

For the third year in a row, the tournament offered two tee times to accommodate a growing number of golfers interested in playing in the event.

BCCC offers training in QuickBooks

Beaufort County Community College’s Division of Continuing Education and its Business and Industry Services will offer training in QuickBooks on Mondays, beginning Oct. 11 and ending Nov. 1, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., in room 822 of Building 8, on the BCCC campus.

Participants will learn how to work with bank accounts, create invoices, pay bills, print checks, and organize their finances. The workshop will also cover information on analyzing financial data.

The $75 cost of the course includes a $65 registration fee and a $5 technology fee. The registration fee may be waived for one course per semester for students 65 years old or older. Pre-registration is required, and the class is limited to 15 students.

“Taking the Plunge: What Every Entrepreneur Should Consider” is the title of a workshop for budding business owners that will be offered by BCCC’s Business and Industry Services from 6 to 8 p.m., on Thursday, Oct. 21, in the auditorium of Building 8 on the BCCC campus. The seminar is co-sponsored by the Washington/Beaufort County Chamber of Commerce.

Workshop participants will learn what it takes to operate a successful business. The session will cover the 10 most important aspects of the entrepreneurial personality, provide a self-assessment for participants, and address the top 10 business and lifestyle questions that all entrepreneurs need to ask.

The instructor of the seminar is Sarah Levitt, owned and operated a wholesale floral and greenhouse business in Durham for 15 years. In 2009, Levitt sold her business and is currently sharing her hard-won wisdom by teaching courses on entrepreneurship at area Small Business Centers.

Bolen is new physical education instructor

It was a love of hockey and a desire to play the sport well that led Kyle Bolen, new health, wellness and physical fitness teacher at Beaufort County Community College, to his career.

At 150 pounds as a high school student, Bolen knew he would have trouble playing hockey at an advanced level. So he started strength training in hopes of overcoming his size by becoming stronger and faster. He tried out several times for junior teams in Canada but never made any of the teams. “I always got cut because of my size,” he said.

But his efforts led Bolen to a life-long love of fitness. “Exercise science has been the mainstay of my life,” he said.

In his new post, Bolen hopes to introduce his students at BCCC to a variety of physical activities that can keep them healthy throughout their lives.

“Health is something they will use every day,” he said. “If the students find something they enjoy, they will continue to do it.”

A native of Mt. Pleasant, Mich., Bolen is a graduate of Shepherd High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Public Health Education and Health Promotion from Central Michigan University in 2005 and a master’s degree in physical education and exercise science from Central Michigan University in 2009.

He has held a variety of coaching and physical education positions and has taught several health education and physical fitness disciplines.

He began his career a strength and conditioning coach intern at Central Michigan University from 2004 to 2006. He later served as a strength and conditioning coach for minor league players with the Pittsburgh Pirates and as strength and conditioning coach for five varsity sports at Central Michigan University.

Before joining the BCCC faculty, he served as an instructor at Central Michigan University teaching health, physical education, fitness, strength and conditioning, youth sports and select activity courses including beginning golf, archery and billiards.

“BCCC is very excited to add a full-time health and physical education instructor to our faculty,” said Dean of Instruction Wesley Beddard. “Kyle's energy and experience as college instructor will help us improve and expand our physical education curriculum and on campus course options for students.”

Bolen lives in Greenville and is looking forward to trying the wide range of water sports available in eastern North Carolina in his spare time.

Beaufort County Community College announces its registration schedule for Spring Semester which is scheduled to begin January 6, 2011.

Dates and deadlines for enrolling and registering are as follows:

November 1 – Registration begins for graduating students who have applied for graduation, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

November 2 – Registration begins for returning students, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

November 3 – Registration for returning students and New Student Orientation followed by registration for students attending an orientation session, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

November 4 – Continued registration for new and returning students, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

December 8 – Deadline to pay tuition for Spring 2011 semester.

January 5 – Late registration, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

January 6 – First day of classes.

January 6, 7, 10 and 11 ― Drop/add at Registrar’s Office.

Tuition and fees at Beaufort County Community College are established by the N.C. General Assembly and the N.C. Board of Community Colleges. In July 2010, tuition for in-state students was set at $56.50 per credit hour and student fees at $2 per credit hour for a total of $58.50 per credit hour. Tuition for out-of-state students was set at $248.50 per credit hour and student fees at $2 per credit hour for a total of $250.50.

BCCC’s Student Support Services grant renewed for five years

A U.S. Department of Education grant that provides funds for the Student Support Services program at Beaufort County Community College has been renewed for five years, college officials announced this week.

The BCCC program is expected to receive more than $1.7 million over the duration of the grant, according to program director Dorothy Jordan.

“The Student Support Services staff is looking forward to serving Beaufort County Community College students and helping them reach their educational goals,” she said in announcing the grant.

Student Support Services, or SSS, is a federal program designed to help qualifying students with a range of academic and support services.

The program provides tutorial services, academic counseling, college transfer help, skills development workshops, access to technology, and cultural enrichment opportunities.

“These services, with the continued support of BCCC faculty and staff, can increase retention and graduation rates and foster a climate that supports the success of low-income and first generation college students and students with disabilities,” Jordan said.

SSS activities scheduled for October at BCCC are examples of the services provided, she said.

They include workshops on choosing a college major, scholarships available to college students, information on transferring to a four-year college or university, a tour of a university campus, and a field trip to see a theatrical performance.

The Division of Continuing Education at Beaufort County Community College will offer a course on the use of Spanish in the work place from 6 to 9 p.m., on Tuesdays, beginning Oct. 12 and ending Nov. 30, in Room 823 of Building 8, on the BCCC campus.

The fee for the course is $70 which includes a $65 registration fee and a technology fee of $5. The $65 registration fee may be waived for one course per semester for students of age 65 or older.

This course will teach students how to communicate with Spanish-speaking customers or workers on the job. Basic Spanish phrases as well as other phrases that are used in students’ specific places of work will be taught in this 24-hour course. This course offers 2.4 continuing education units.

BCCC announces entrepreneurial core curriculum classes

Business and Industry Services at Beaufort County Community College announces a schedule of classes this academic year that serve as the core curriculum for potential and existing small business owners.

The classes are designed to help entrepreneurs understand the basics of starting, advertising, financing, and keeping records for their existing and potential small businesses as well as business plan development.

“This is a good time for potential or existing small business owners to advance their skills and knowledge in a well-presented series of classes that address the basics of small business ownership,” said Director Lentz Stowe. “This is also a great opportunity for participants to network with others.”

Participants can register to attend one or more of these classes. They are scheduled as follows:

How to Write a Business Plan: 6 to 8:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 13, Room 823, Building 8 on the BCCC campus. A business plan is the foundation for success when future business owners are deciding whether to start a new business or buy an existing business. It is also a valuable tool for entrepreneurs seeking financing for their businesses. Some of the topics to be discussed in the seminar are writing the business plan, finding the required information, issues to be aware of when writing the plan, and how to find help with the plan. Volunteers from SCORE will be the instructors for the course.

Advertising and Marketing for Small Businesses: 6 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 18, Room 823 of Building 8 on the BCCC campus. This course is designed to teach participants low-cost advertising and marketing strategies and methods. Students will learn to create a marketing plan and score greater sales with current customers. The instructors are members of S.C.O.R.E.

Financing Your Small Business: 6 to 8:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 25, Room 823, Building 8 on the BCCC campus. This course is designed to teach participants ways to finance their small businesses including information on grants and loans available to help. It will also provide information on where entrepreneurs can obtain good, solid, and reliable financial advice. The instructors are members of S.C.O.R.E.

Recordkeeping and Taxes for Your Small Business: 6 to 8:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 8, Room 823, Building 8 on the BCCC campus. This seminar will help participants understand the financial aspects of their businesses including financial statements, working with bankers, filing federal and state reports, and financial terms that may be confusing. The instructor is Ashley Harris, a CPA with Thomas Swanner & Co. in Washington.

BCCC Student Government Association officers begin new year

It was “all in the family” when BCCC Student Government Association President Milton E. Cobb and six other newly installed officers – including his wife - met for the first time recently to begin planning SGA activities for the 2010-2011 school year.

Cobb, 39, will be joined by officers Demetrius Cox, vice president; Sharrie Mooring, secretary; Lori Diaz, treasurer; Trina Cobb, parliamentarian, Lauren Davis, historian, and Jonathon Brown, special populations in leading SGA activities: Theresa Edwards will serve as their advisor.

Cobb, a Washington native, is a 1989 graduate of Washington High School. After graduating from high school, Cobb studied at Hardbarger Junior College in Raleigh before returning to Washington. He has worked for the past 15 years at Websters, Inc., an automobile repair and service business, in Washington. At BCCC, he has been a member of the Onyx Club, a male mentoring organization.

Cobb is an active member of the Temple of Joy Pentecostal Faith Church, Inc., of Grimesland where he served on the Usher Board and as deacon of the church financial committee. He also attended leadership training classes at the church under the tutelage of Pastor Georgette Redmond. He is the son of Rosa Cobb of Washington and Jasper Keyes of New York, N.Y. He and his wife have seven children.

Cox, 27, of Plymouth, is pursuing a degree in electrical engineering from BCCC. Cox attended Plymouth High School and the adult high school at Martin Community College. The son of Leslie and Jeannette Price of Plymouth, he is employed at the Wendy’s of Plymouth. He also hopes to pursue an associate’s degree in electronic engineering.

Mooring, 47, of Vanceboro, is a student in BCCC’s Associate Degree Nursing program. A graduate of Eastern Wayne High School, she also holds an associate’s degree in practical nursing. She and her husband, David, have six children. She is the daughter of Billy and Carolyn Mozingo and hopes to continue her nursing studies after graduating from BCCC.

Diaz, 41, of Washington, is an accounting student at BCCC. She is a graduate of Warren Western High School. Diaz and her husband, Daniel, have five children. She hopes to transfer to East Carolina University after graduating from BCCC. This is her second term as SGA Treasurer

Cobb, 35, is a medical office administration student at BCCC. She is a graduate of Chocowinity High School. The daughter of Robert and Lina Harris, she is married to BCCC President Milton Cobb and has seven children.

Davis, 21, is pursuing an associate degree nursing at BCCC. A graduate of Washington High School, she divides her time between Washington and Columbia. She is the daughter of Todd and Paula Oliver and Jimmy and Leisa Davis and is employed at Beaufort County Medical Center as a certified nursing assistant. This is her second term as SGA Historian.

Brown, 36, of Washington, is pursuing an associate degree in computer information technology from BCCC. A graduate of Washington High School, he is the son of Thomasia and Matthew Brown of Washington. Both of his parents are BCCC graduates.

The Student Government Association at BCCC provides an organized avenue of student involvement in the college. The SGA implements and plans activities that provide students with social and service projects that interest them.

Marine Captain's License Course

The Division of Continuing Education at Beaufort County Community College will offer a marine captain’s license course 6 to 9 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays beginning Sept. 15 and ending Dec. 8 in Room 826 on the BCCC campus.
The registration fee is $175. Supplies and books are an additional course. The registration fee may be waived by students 65 years old and older for one course per semester.
This 60-hour course will prepare students to take the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Captain’s Exam. Boatmanship, rules of the road, chair reading and mapping are just a few of the items covered in this course. It awards six continuing education units.

BCCC practical nursing graduates pinned

The 2010 graduates of the Practical Nursing program at Beaufort County Community College, pictured at right, received their nursing school pins recently in a ceremony earlier this summer on the BCCC campus.
Those receiving pins were Betty Jo Ayers, Amanda Barnhill, Amanda L. Bland, Misty L. Boyd, Toni D. Brinn, Latoya S. Brown, Victoria J. Carrow, Kelly Michelle Elks, Kimberly Fagley, Jessica B. Pinning ceremonies in their currently recognizable form began in 1893. The pin is awarded to the nurse to recognize the achievement of entering the profession and to signify a graduate’s affiliation with a specific nursing school.
The recent practical nursing graduates are qualified to take the state licensure examination. Upon successful completion of the exam, the new LPNs will be able to work in long-term care facilities, acute-care settings and doctors’ offices.

Sauls joins BCCC full-time faculty

Like so many public school, community college and university teachers, new Beaufort County Community College Instructor Dana Sauls knew from an early age that she wanted to teach.
From the age of 10, she would regularly play school with her younger brother, playing the part of teacher and giving all sorts of assignments to her younger sibling. She was so good at it that her brother knew how to write his name and knew the alphabet when he entered kindergarten.
“I’ve been teaching ever since,” Sauls said in a recent interview.
But new member of BCCC’s Developmental Education full-time faculty once had trouble mastering the subject she is now teaching, giving her special insights into her students’ struggles. She succeeds Emily Albera, who retired last year.
“I absolutely disliked reading,” she said.
As a middle school student, Sauls discovered that she had trouble mastering reading comprehension. And the tutor who helped her overcome her reading difficulties was the inspiration for Sauls’ future career.
“I wanted to make a difference like she did in my life,” she said.
A graduate of Washington High School, Sauls earned a bachelor’s degree in education from ECU in 1992 with a concentration in reading. In 2006, Sauls returned to college to pursue a master’s degree in education from ECU and is scheduled to graduate in December. While at ECU, she has earned the Becky Keith Ledford Memorial Scholarship for two consecutive years. The scholarship, awarded by ECU’s College of Education at East Carolina University, is awarded to a graduate student majoring in reading education based on the demonstrated ability to teach.
Sauls is a veteran educator. She served as a teacher’s assistant at Chocowinity Primary School from 1993 to 1995. She has also served as an exceptional children’s teacher at John Small School and at P.S. Jones Middle School from 1995 to 1998.
After the birth of a son, Chase, Sauls returned to the classroom part-time as a reading tutor at BCCC in 1999 and began to teach reading part-time at the college in 2002 in addition to her tutoring responsibilities.
“As an adjunct for the past ten years, Dana is already an integral part of the Developmental Education Department,” said Dell Enecks, lead instructor in BCCC’s Developmental Education Program. “Dana’s enthusiasm and creativity in and out of the classroom inspire her students to achieve more. The entire department is thrilled that Dana is now with us on a full-time basis.”
Sauls is a member of Snowd Branch Church of God, where she is a teacher in the children’s church.
She and her husband, Kris, have two children, Chase, 12, a 7th-grade student at Bath Elementary School, and Aaron, 9, a 4th-grade student at Bath Elementary School.
In her spare time, she enjoys swimming, fishing and boating on the Pamlico River, spending time with her family and being a spectator at her sons’ athletic events.

Elks joins BCCC full-time faculty

From an early age, new Beaufort County Community College Instructor Michele Elks knew that she wanted to be a teacher.
As a young girl, she would regularly play school with her younger sister, playing the part of teacher and giving all sorts of assignments to her younger sibling.
“When I’m in front of a class teaching, that’s when I’m in my element,” Elks said in a recent interview.
Elks has joined the BCCC Business Division as a teacher in the Medical Office and Office Administration programs. She succeeds Debra Baker, who has been named lead instructor of the two programs.
“I’m very excited to have the opportunity to work with our students,” she said. “I really look forward to coming in every day. I’m excited to settle in and be here full-time.”
A graduate of Washington High School and a North Carolina Teaching Fellow, Elks attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before transferring to East Carolina University. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from ECU in 1990 with concentrations in science and French. In 1994, Elks earned a master’s degree in education with a science concentration from ECU. While there, she participated in the North Carolina Project for Reform in Science Education.
Elks is a veteran teacher. From 1990 to 1996, she served as a seventh grade science teacher at P.S. Jones Middle School in Washington. She left the teaching profession when her children were young and worked as a medical transcriptionist and bookkeeper for Pamlico Internal Medicine and Pamlico Urgent Care from April 1997 to May 2003 and from September 2008 to the present.
“Transcription was actually easy for me to pick up because of my background in science,” she said.
In recent years, Elks returned to the classroom in 2003, serving as a part-time instructor at BCCC teaching medical terminology, medical transcription and machine transcription, a post she held until joining the full-time faculty. She has also worked as an earth and environmental science teacher at Washington High School.
“All the pieces have fallen into place to lead me here,” she said. “I feel like this is where I’ll stay until I retire.”
Elks has been active in educational and civic organizations in the community for many years. She has held offices in local parent-teacher organization, chaired the Bath Elementary Fall Festival for three years, served as a volunteer coach of the Bath Elementary School Science Olympiad team and has served on the board of the Beaufort County Education Foundation.
A life-long tennis player, Elks is the coach of the boys and girls tennis teams at Washington High School and organized and coached the USTA Summer League for boys and girls at Washington High School during the summers of 2009 and 2010. She also coordinates free-play Tuesdays at Washington High School for any interested tennis players in the off-season to encourage both her high school players and non-traditional players to develop their tennis skills.
Elks is a mentor in the Young Lives program which helps unwed mothers stay in school and is a member of First Free Will Baptist Church.
"The Business Division is lucky to have Michele Elks join us as a full-time Medical Office Administrator and Office Administrator instructor,” said Business Division Chairman Donna Dunn. “She is a very good instructor and brings much practical experience, especially in medical transcription, to the position. Students enjoy her classes and she is a very student-centered educator."
Elks has three children, Joshua, 19, a sophomore at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington; Jacob, 16, a junior at Washington High School, and Dawson, 10, a fifth grade student at Bath Elementary School.
In her spare time, she enjoys reading, running and spending time with her sons.

17th Annual Golf Tournament set for Sept. 10

The 17th annual Beaufort County Community College Foundation Golf Tournament will be held Friday, Sept. 10, at the Washington Yacht and Country Club.

The tournament, sponsored by PCS Phosphate, is held each year to raise money for scholarships to BCCC.

Co-sponsors of the tournament are Lee Chevrolet-Buick, East Carolina Bank, First South Bank, Embarq, Flanders Filters, JFK Architecture, P & G Manufacturing Inc., Tideland EMC, Carver Machine Works and Park Boat Company.

The tournament format will be a four-person super ball with teams pre-flighted based on each golfer's handicap. There will be two tee times offered ― 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.- with a limit of 20 teams per session.

"In recent years, we offered two tee times and this was a very popular format with our players so we wanted to continue that same format this year," she said.

The entry fee remains the same as last year ― $70 per player ― and includes lunch, cart rental, greens fee and two Mulligans.

The largest single annual fundraising event for the college, the tournament typically raises more than $10,000 for scholarships and programs supported by the BCCC Foundation.

Team prizes will be awarded by 18-hole score in each of three flights in the morning and afternoon session. Four prize packages for "closest to the pin" shots will also be awarded. Hole-in-one prizes sponsored by Lee Chevrolet-Pontiac-Buick and Park Boat Company will also be available.

BCCC is now tobacco-free campus

Beaufort County Community College on Aug. 1 joined 35 other universities, colleges, and community colleges across North Carolina which ban smoking and the use of other tobacco products on the campus. The policy applies to BCCC students, staff, faculty and visitors to the campus.

The smoking and tobacco-free campus policy was approved by the BCCC Board of Trustees following an on-campus study of smoking and tobacco use.

The ban replaces a previous smoking and tobacco use policy which restricted smoking within 50 feet of all campus buildings and designated smoking areas.

Under the new policy, the use of tobacco is prohibited in all campus buildings and vehicles owned by BCCC, on campus grounds, and property owned by the college, and at all events held on the college campus. It stipulates that visitors who repeatedly violate the policy will be asked to leave the campus and calls for various sanctions against students, staff, and faculty members who violate the policy. It also calls for information to be distributed to students and BCCC employees about programs that will help them stop smoking or using other tobacco products.

Signs designating BCCC as a tobacco-free campus will be placed at all campus entrances.

Other eastern North Carolina community colleges which pro- hibit the use of tobacco products on campus are College of the Albemarle, Roanoke-Chowan Community College, Wayne Com- munity College, Cape Fear Community College and Lenoir Community College, according to Tobacco-Free Colleges, one of 60 organizations across the state that promote the prevention of tobacco use among college-aged students.

Surveys of college employees conducted before the board vote showed that most favored some form of a smoke-free policy on campus.

Cake Decorating II offered

The Division of Continuing Education at Beaufort County Community College will offer two sessions of its popular Explorations in Pottery class this fall.

The first class will be 6 to 9 p.m.Wednesdays beginning Aug. 4 and ending Oct. 6 in Room 825 of Building 8 on the BCCC campus. The second class will be 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays beginning Oct. 13 and ending Dec. 15. Both classes will be in Room 825 of Building 8 on the BCCC campus.

Students will use slab building techniques to create decorative yet functional tableware. Students will also be introduced to the potter’s wheel as another tool to form clay into specific shapes. Students will furnish their own tools and will be responsible for maintaining a clean studio.

July 26 through Sept. 29 with no class held on Sept. 6;

Oct. 28 through Dec. 16 with no class on Nov. 11 or Nov. 25.

Students in this self-paced class will learn how to repair outboard motors, maintain them and save time and money as well. Tools and stands for motors are provided. The instructor is Jesse Elks.

Early College High School student fashions a career in design

A Beaufort County Early College High School student with a flair for style and color made her debut as a fashion designer at a recent fashion show at the Washington Civic Center.

Tiarra Blount, of Washington, a 16-year-old student at BCECHS, unveiled her first fashion line during the show.

Blount’s fashion line, which she’s dubbed Personality, is a combination of dressy and casual pieces. The designer’s love of vivid colors and unusual fabrics is evident.

“I wanted to do modeling, but they told me I’m too short,” the teenager said with a smile. “So, since I love fashion I decided to try designing.”

This isn’t exactly a new venture for Blount.

“I just started getting clothes made this year, but I’ve been drawing clothes since I was little,” she said.

Designing has been a longtime hobby for the teenager, agreed her mother, Chandra Blount.

“She was never into making clothes for her dolls, because she wasn’t really a doll person,” the elder Blount said of her daughter. “But she’s always liked designing clothes and putting together outfits for herself.”

The designer said she’s inspired by music while she’s putting pen to paper and creating outfits. She shops for fabrics in Greenville and Virginia. Local seamstress Shayla Cobb brings Blount’s sketches to life.

The collection includes a jungle-print, strapless top featuring a vibrant, emerald green bodice. Another piece pairs a white top with a bubble-skirt in shades of lime green, yellow and hot pink.

Blount is hoping to catch the eye of a local boutique owner interested in adding the line to the shop’s inventory.

She’s also looking ahead, planning for her next fashion show in six months. Then, she wants to add men’s and boys’ wear to her line.

Like most teenage girls, Blount said, her hobbies include shopping. And she can’t resist comparing the clothing she sees on the racks with what she creates.

“I’ll look at something and know I could do it better,” she said with a laugh.

BCCC Staff Association meeting set

The BCCC Staff Association will meet Tuesday, Aug. 3, at 2:30 p.m. in Room 104 of Building 1 on the BCCC campus. All you have to do is pay membership dues of $10 to Brown McFadden, located in Room 110 in Building 1 and come to the meeting.

New Staff Association President JoLinda Cooper had the following message for BCCC staff:

"We are also offering No Raffle Insurance for $10. You can pay your dues and buy insurance at the meeting.

We usually have a door prize at the opening meeting, but you must be present to win.

Please come and bring a friend or two. We'd like to recruit as many people as we can and work towards making this the best organization it can be. Again, the membership is $10 a year. We have several official meetings and sponsor activities in an effort to increase moral, cohesion, and camaraderie.

At this meeting, we will plan things to do throughout the semester, elect representatives for our standing committees, and hopefully come up with more ideas that will strengthen and improve this organization. We have incredible staff on this campus and working together we can continue to show everyone on this campus and in the community how awesome we really are."

Cooper heads BCCC Staff Association

JoLinda Cooper, a Beaufort County Community College alumna, has been chosen to head the BCCC Staff Association for the 2010-2011 Academic Year. Other staff association officers are Romance Slade, vice president; Pauline Godley, secretary, and Brown McFadden, treasurer.

Cooper, a native of Washington and graduate of Washington High School, serves as office manager for BCCC's Arts and Sciences Division. She worked 20 years at National Spinning, Inc before it downsized. She earned an associate's degree in Office Systems Technology and General Education from BCCC, served as one of the college's Ambassadors, and is currently pursuing a bachelor's degree. Cooper's career at BCCC began as an office assistant and later as the evening receptionist. Cooper serves on several campus committees and is excited about her new role as President of the Staff Association.

As a BCCC student, Cooper said she welcomed the opportunity for education and training she received at the college. As president of the BCCC Staff Association, Cooper said her goal "will be to continue to work towards staff communication, participation, and good will with the college and the community.”

“The Staff Association helps to raise morale, camaraderie, and foster opportunities for professional development," she said.

A Hyde County native, Slade is maintenance supply clerk at BCCC. A 1982 graduate of Mattamuskeet High School, Slade served in the U.S. Navy from 1984 to 1991, traveling around the world aboard the U.S.S. Scott as a dispersal clerk, handling payroll. He has been employed at the college for almost 12 years and has been an active member of the BCCC staff association. Slade and his wife, Tina Louise, live in Belhaven and have one son. Slade is a member of the Disciples of Christ Church in Scranton. In his spare time he enjoys playing basketball and spending time outside.

Godley, office manager for BCCC’s Business Division, has been employed at the college for 22 years. She has been an active member of the BCCC Staff Association and has held all major offices in the association. Pauline has also completed a bachelor’s degree in business administration and is scheduled to complete her master’s degree in December 2010. In her spare time, Godley enjoys reading, family time, and socializing with friends. She is a native of Washington, N.C. and has one son.

A native of Rock Hill, S.C., McFadden is BCCC’s network administrator. As network administrator, McFadden is responsible for overseeing BCCC’s computer network, servers and telecommunications needs. He earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical and computer engineering in 1976 from Clemson University and a master’s in business administration from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C., in 1988. He has nearly 40 years experience in the computer field and 20 years experience in computer network and telecommunications. McFadden is a Mason and a member of Orr Lodge 104 A.F. and A.M., serving six years as the group’s secretary, a scout leader with Troop 21 BSA and is a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church where he served as chairman of the Administrative Board from 1997 to 2000, among other postsMcFadden and his wife, Sandria, director of BCCC’s Career Center, live in Washington with their two children, Leanna and Chris.

In recent years, the BCCC Staff Association has helped with Hurricane Katrina relief efforts and has sponsored various fundraising activities that have provided funding for a scholarship for a student attending BCCC. The staff association also sponsors several campus social events each year.

Any member of the BCCC staff is eligible to join the staff association. Dues for the 2010-2011 Academic Year that began July 1 are $10 and should be paid to Brown McFadden, Building 1, Room 110. Tuition increases at BCCC

Tuition will increase at Beaufort County Community College this fall as a result of action by the N.C. General Assembly and the N.C. Board of Community Colleges.
Tuition at BCCC will increase for students from $50 to $56.50 per credit hour for residents and from $241.30 to $248.50 per credit hour for non-residents effective at registration for the Fall 2010 Semester.
The maximum tuition increase for resident students is $104 a semester, bringing resident tuition for students seeking 16 or more credit hours to $904. The maximum tuition increase for non-resident students is $115.20 a semester, bringing non-resident tuition for students seeking 16 or more credit hours to $3,976.
Student activity fees for resident and non-resident students remain unchanged, at $2 per credit hour. The maximum student activity fee is $32, based on 16 hours of instruction.
Registration for Fall Semester 2010 is scheduled to begin July 12 and continues on dates and times as follows:

* July 12 – Registration begins for returning students, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* July 14 – New Student Orientation at 10 .m. followed by registration for students attending an orientation session. Registration continues for returning students 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
* July 15 – Continued registration for new and returning students, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Aug. 5 – Deadline to pay tuition for Fall semester.

BCCC President David McLawhorn announces retirement

After a decade as the head of Beaufort County Community College, Dr. David McLawhorn, the fourth BCCC president, announced he will retire effective July 1, 2011.

“I am looking forward to having more time for myself and my family,” McLawhorn said. “At the same time, I’m really going to miss the camaraderie we have at the college.”

“I am really fortunate to have worked with outstanding and dedicated faculty and staff,” he said. “And I am indebted to the College Board of Trustees and the BCCC Foundation Board of Directors for their support over the years.”

After an education career spanning more than 40 years, McLawhorn said he looks forward to spending time with a soon-to-be-born great-grandchild, playing golf, fishing, and “piddling.”

McLawhorn announced his retirement at a recent meeting of the BCCC Board of Trustees. The first step for the board in choosing McLawhorn’s successor is a meeting with N.C. Community College System President Scott Ralls to plan a search, college officials have said.

Robert Cayton, a member and past chairman of the BCCC Board of Trustees, said McLawhorn has “done a great job” in his years as college president.

“Dr. McLawhorn is leaving the college stronger and better able to serve the education needs of its service area in the 21^st Century.”

A native of Ayden, McLawhorn succeeded retiring BCCC President U. Ron Champion after serving as BCCC’s Dean of Instruction for 11 years. In his previous post, McLawhorn supervised and coordinated the curriculum programs and library services for the college.

As president, McLawhorn, known affectionately by BCCC faculty and staff as “Dr. Mac,” has seen unprecedented enrollment growth and several new construction projects at the college, which celebrated its 40^th anniversary during McLawhorn’s tenure.

McLawhorn has overseen the construction of new buildings on campus – including the Public Safety Building and the Public Service Building – the expansion of the college’s nursing programs and the opening of a new campus-based early college high school.

And during the past two years, enrollment at BCCC has increased some 22 percent to a record 1,918 in Fall Semester 2009.

Mitch St. Clair, chairman of the BCCC Trustees said, “Dr. McLawhorn has been a great president. He has taken Beaufort County Community College to the next level and beyond. He will be missed by the Board of Trustees, the Foundation Board of Directors, staff, faculty, and students. Dr. McLawhorn has been an asset to our community and I hope he enjoys his retirement.”

McLawhorn has also been active in civic life in Beaufort County. He has served as chairman of the Beaufort County Partnership for Children, as president of the Washington Rotary Club, and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Beaufort County United Way and the Washington-Beaufort Chamber of Commerce. He is a life member of the N.C. National Guard Association and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Washington.

Mary Elizabeth McNeill, executive director of the Beaufort County United Way, has worked with McLawhorn through that agency.

“Dr. McLawhorn has been a dedicated member of the United Way Board of Directors,” she said. “He does so much for this agency and means so much to the community, particularly our 18 community partners. His leadership has helped this program grow.”

“In addition to his vast knowledge of community needs, he is a great person to be around,” she said.

Bill Wall, a fellow Rotarian and member of the BCCC Foundation Board of Directors, has played on a team for several years with McLawhorn in the foundation’s annual golf tournament.

“Just like in golf and his confident putting style, David has gone through life much in the same manner, whether it has been managing the operations of BCCC, raising a diverse family, or church and Rotary involvement. He is very confident, he evaluates the alternatives, develops a plan, takes aim and executes,” Wall said. “My life has been enriched by having been associated with David in many of these activities. While he may be retiring as president of BCCC, he will continue to be the kind, gracious man we have all come to know and respect.”

McLawhorn and his wife, Terri Ann, live in Washington and have two daughters, Megan and Anna. He also has two sons, Matthew and Jeffrey, from a previous marriage, and four grandchildren – with one more on the way. The McLawhorns have also been foster parents to more than 20 children, including Michelle, Jennie, and Regina.

Among the most recent accomplishments at BCCC under McLawhorn’s direction are the following:

2003 – BCCC’s new Public Safety Building for criminal justice, fire, EMT, and Basic Law Enforcement Training opened July 21.

2003 – A new building is erected to house BCCC’s new Heavy Equipment and Transportation Technology programs.

2004 – BCCC’s Board of Trustees purchased some 32 acres of land for future expansion and to maintain wooded buffers around campus.

2005 – BCCC’s welding lab is expanded to include non-ferrous fabrication technology.

2006 – BCCC’s new Public Service Building, housing cosmetology, early childhood development, and human services technology programs opens in January.

2006 – BCCC’s Board of Trustees purchased two additional acres of land for future BCCC expansion.

2006 – The Katie Paul Building is renovated and the college’s nursing programs are expanded.

2006 – The Delmar Keech Building is renovated to enhance business classrooms and computer labs.

2006 – BCCC and East Carolina University sign an agreement establishing BCCC as a hub for teacher training through the Wachovia Partnership.

2007 – The BCCC Foundation reaches $1 million in assets.

2008 – Classes begin in August for the first class of students at the Beaufort Early College High School, located in Building 10 on the BCCC campus.

2009 – By July of 2009 construction is completed on the new Public Safety Annex to handle law enforcement and public safety training.

2009 – BCCC receives a $200,000 JobsNOW grant to provide short-term training for more than 120 jobless workers.

2009 – BCCC sets a record enrollment for the Fall Semester, with 1,918 students enrolled, some 188 students more than the then-record-breaking Fall 2008 Semester.

2010 – Planning is under way for a new Allied Health Building on the eastern edge of the BCCC campus to allow for additional expansion of BCCC’s Nursing and Medical Laboratory Technology programs.

Health unit coordinator class to start August 2

The Division of Continuing Education at Beaufort County Community College is offering a Health Unit Coordinator course starting on August 2. This course is designed to train students how to perform the many administrative tasks associated with any unit within a medical facility – especially a hospital.
This course includes specific training in medical law and ethics, medical transcription and abbreviations, nursing station management, communications, hospital safety and emergency procedures, the hospital work environment, handling patient charts, understanding medication orders, as well as several hours of hands on training and observation. The instructor is Lydell Bishop.
The first class will begin on August 2 and meet from 5 to 9 pm, in room 823 of building 8 on the BCCC campus. The remainder of the classes will continue through October 29 and will meet over a wide variety of days and times at Beaufort County Medical Center, formerly Beaufort County Hospital.
The fee for this class is $120. Students will also be required to purchase a book, Being a Health Unit Coordinator for $76, as well malpractice/accident Insurance at a cost of $14.25.
All students must have or do the following:
· GED or high school diploma
· Must provide records of two administration of MMR, or mumps, measles, rubella, vaccines
· Must show proof of negative PPD, or tuberculosis, skin test
· Must wear blue lab coat, available at a cost of $18 to 20, and identification name tag while at the hospital

The Division of Continuing Education at Beaufort County Community College is offering a notary class in August. Individuals wishing to become a Notary Public must take this course.
The class will be held on August 17 and 18 from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. in the auditorium of Building 8, on the BCCC campus. The registration fee is $65 and the required textbook is $27. BCCC offers Commercial Driver's License refresher course

Classes will begin July 12 for Beaufort County Community College’s commercial driver license (CDL) refresher course, designed for students who currently hold their Class-A Commercial Drivers License. Completion of a course such as this is required by most employers of drivers who have not driven a classified vehicle within a designated period of time.
This 120 hour course includes classroom instruction, off road instruction, and behind-the-wheel driving of a Class-A combination vehicle. The course will take approximately 5 - weeks to complete. Students will review many of the skills necessary to safely operate a class – A combination vehicle. All students are required to have their Class – A CDL license, DOT health card, and original drug test at the time of registration. In addition, students will be subjected to random drug screening throughout the duration of the course. Class size is limited to 24 students.
The CDL class will be conducted July 12 through August 15 from 6 to 9:30 p.m., on Mondays and Wednesdays, and from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Driving hours will vary. Class work will be in Building 7 on the BCCC campus.
The registration fee for the course is $175 and the random drug testing fee is $25. The required textbook is $50, road atlas $25.25, logbook $6.75 and logbook trainer $4.50. Books are available at the BCCC book store. However, book prices are subject to change. If an additional road test is needed, the fee is $125.
Registrations will be accepted beginning July 1, 2010. Please note that the course will begin on the scheduled date and time pending sufficient student enrollment for the class. Otherwise the course may be postponed or cancelled.

Bliley to return as BCCC Faculty Senate president

Laura Bliley, Director of Nursing at Beaufort County Community College, has begun her second term as head of the BCCC Faculty Senate for the 2010-2011 Academic Year. Serving with Bliley as Faculty Senate officers, also for a second term, are Kimberly Mullis, vice president; Jeanne Martin, secretary, and Owen “Jay” Anders, treasurer.

As president of the Faculty Senate, Bliley attends meetings of the BCCC Board of Trustees, the BCCC Foundation Board of Directors, and serves as an ex officio member of several of the college’s boards and advisory committees.

A native of Washington, Bliley has been a member of the BCCC faculty since 1994, serving as an instructor of fundamentals, pediatrics, and psychiatric nursing in the college’s Associate Degree Nursing program before being named to her current position. As director of nursing, she supervises some 15 full- and part-time members of the Associate Degree and Practical Nursing faculty at BCCC, coordinates the college’s nursing programs with local clinical agencies, ensures program compliance with state Board of Nursing mandates and continues to teach some nursing courses at the college. Bliley is a graduate of Washington High School. She received a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1983 and a master’s degree in nursing from East Carolina University in 1992.

Mullis has taught mathematics at BCCC for eight years. She is a graduate of East Carolina University.

Martin has served as an instructor in BCCC’s Associate Degree Nursing Program since 2006. She is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Havelock, N.C. native Anders is lead instructor of accounting at BCCC, a post he has held since 2007. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from University of Tampa in 1967 and a bachelor’s degree in accounting from East Carolina University in 1986. He also holds a master’s in business administration from Campbell University, a master’s in accounting from Golden Gate University, and is a Certified Public Accountant in the State of North Carolina. Anders is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants.

These officers work with the entire membership of the Faculty Senate to communicate ideas and concerns, both to and from, all levels of the BCCC administration. The Faculty Senate is instrumental in reviewing BCCC policies, setting academic schedules, and sponsoring campus-wide social events as well as an annual scholarship for a BCCC student.

BCCC Cosmetology School appointments available on summer schedule

Appointments for salon procedures at Beaufort County Community College’s Cosmetology School are available Tuesdays and Thursdays, Lead Instructor Velma Worsley announced this week.
Clients can be seen from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the school, located in Building 11 on the BCCC campus. Clients seeking chemical treatments must sign in by 8 a.m. and those seeking other services, by 9:15 a.m.
All patrons of the BCCC’s Cosmetology School Salon are strongly urged to schedule appointments. Appointments will be on a first come, first served basis and although the school will make every effort to arrange for a specific student, if requested by a patron for a specific service, the school cannot guarantee that can be done at any given time.
Patrons are asked to let the cosmetology school know the services they want when making their appointments, so the school can plan for their visit.

Introduction to MS Word offered at BCCC

Introduction to Digital Photography offered

Third JobsNOW Welding Course begins June 21

The Division of Continuing Education at Beaufort County Community College is preparing to offer its third welding course through the JobsNOW grant program. This class is specifically designed to provide short-term training for jobless workers and get them back in the workforce with a good paying job. The course of study consists of 106 contact hours in welding plus 40 hours of Human Resources Development and Career Readiness Certification training. This course will provide instruction that may lead to entry level employment in welding.
The HRD/CRC training will provide students with time to preview job openings and assist them in developing the tools necessary to acquire a position. Upon successful completion of HRD/CRC component, as well as the welding course, students will earn a Career Readiness Certificate which will afford them the distinction of achieving a nationally recognized work preparedness certification to compliment and enhance job related qualifications. CRC testing is now used as a hiring benchmark for 85% of jobs in the United States today.
The welding component of this course is designed to provide stick and MIG welding certification training. Stick refers to the shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) process and places emphasis on padding, fillet, and groove welds in various positions with SMAW electrodes. MIG welding, more commonly referred to as GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) is an inert gas welding process.
The welding portion of this class begins on June 21 and ends on July 29. Training will be conducted Monday through Thursday, from 6-10 pm in building 4, on the BCCC campus.
The HRD/CRC portion of this class begins on Monday, June 28 and ends on July 14. Students will meet Monday through Thursday from 1-5 pm in room 822 of building 8 on the BCCC campus.
The registration fee for this class is $175 plus $1.25 for insurance. The test fee is $30.
Pre-Registration is required. The class size is limited to 15 students. You may register with a Visa or MasterCard, check, or money order made payable to BCCC. Visa or MasterCard transactions can be made over the phone by calling 252-940-6375. You may also register in building 8, on the BCCC campus. New BCCC associate degree nursing graduates pinned

Forty-six graduates of Beaufort County Community College’s Associate Degree Nursing program received their nursing school pins Saturday, May 15, in a ceremony which is a traditional rite of passage for nursing school graduates across the country. The ceremony was held in the Washington High School auditorium.

During the ceremony, held in the Washington High School auditorium, three students received four awards honoring their academic and nursing success. The Leadership Award went to Carla Asby. Two Outstanding Student awards were presented - one to Kasi Grimes and the other to Jeanne Rutledge. The Katie Paul Award for Clinical Excellence in Bedside Nursing was presented to Marion D. Griffin. Deb Riley received the Academic Excellence Award.

Pinning ceremonies in their currently recognizable form began in 1893. The pin is awarded to the nurse to recognize the achievement of entering the profession and to signify a nursing graduate’s affiliation with a specific school.

The graduates are now qualified to take the state licensure examination. Twenty-two of the graduates already had jobs.

Beaufort County Community College announces its registration schedule for Fall Semester which is scheduled to begin Aug. 16, 2010.

Dates and deadlines for enrolling and registering are as follows:

· July 12 - Registration begins for returning students, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

· July 14 - New Student Orientation at 10 .m. followed by registration for students attending an orientation session. Registration continues for returning students 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

· July 15 - Continued registration for new and returning students, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

· Aug. 5 - Deadline to pay tuition for Fall semester.

· Aug. 16 - Late registration, 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

· Aug. 17 - First day of classes.

· Aug. 18 to 20 - Drop/add at Registrar's Office.

New students may apply to enroll in BCCC at the Admissions Office in Building 9 on the BCCC campus or on the BCCC website at www.beaufortccc.edu.

Tuition and fees at Beaufort County Community College are established by the N.C. General Assembly and the N.C. Board of Community Colleges. Currently, tuition for in-state students is $52 per credit hour and $243.30 per credit hour for out-of-state students. Although a tuition increase is anticipated in the upcoming fiscal year, no firm number will be available until the state budget is passed.
